The Amazon Rain Forest, known as the lungs of the planet, is on fire at this very moment. It's the largest rain forest in the world, making up over 40% of tropical forests on Earth. In addition, it's the largest absorption area of Carbon Dioxide on the planet, and it also produces approximately 20% of the Oxygen for all living things, including us. Known for it's spectacular biodiversity, to say the Amazon Rain Forest is an important part of our existence is an understatement.

Most people are familiar with rattlesnakes, even if they've only seen them on television. Here in the backcountry of San Diego County they are very common, especially in mountainous and desert like areas. But have you ever heard of a rattleless rattlesnake? This specific rattlesnake exists on the Island of Santa Catalina in the Sea of Cortez.

The Kermode bear is a subspecies of the black bear, but it has one primary difference. The Kermode bear is white. It is not albino, and instead its color comes from a recessive gene mutation that gives the bear white fur. Unlike an albino animal, its skin and eyes are pigmented.

Sunscreen chemicals trigger a hormonal imbalance in marine mammals, resulting in decreased fertility rates that carry on to their young. In dolphins, sunscreen chemicals build up in soft tissue and transfer to their young during breastfeeding. Transfer is also seen in seals and sea lions.

It’s highly unusual for a mountain lion to attack a human being, especially during the day. But unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened on Memorial Day, here in San Diego. The attack occurred around 2:30pm in a 4,000-acre park known as Carson’s Crossing, in Los Penasquitos Canyon. The victim was a 4-year-old boy and one of about a dozen people present when the attack occurred.
